Hi Baldy,

"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:"

Wm. Shakespeare As You Like It

Joe Paterno was not fired because he failed to act when he was notified of possible abuse by a former coach. He did act, doing what he was legally required to do by notifying his superiors. He has not been charged with a crime; they have. Why then was he fired? He was terminated because he is Joe Paterno, legendary coach. He is, in fact a sacrificial lamb to the forces of Child Chastity, and "Thou Shall Not Touch". It is tantamount to the human sacrifices of the ancient Maya; the bigger the problem the more influential and important the sacrifice must be.

The fact is, adult/child sexual interactions are considered the most heinous crime that can be committed. People's reaction to it are worse than murder, ponzi schemes, and yes, even treason. The population goes absolutely visceral in their responses. Reason and rational thought go out the window.

The question becomes, after having told your bosses, would you have reported it to the police? What would you have done in Coach Paterno's place? If you do report it then you are involved in a situation in which no one wants to be involved. You will be called upon to name names, recall facts, and say out loud that which no one wants to say. To most people, this is so horrible that they would rather pass it on and forget about it. Furthermore, you have a job to do - a very high profile job, and you want to get back to it. How many of us could honestly say that we would have acted differently than Paterno? Key word: Honestly.

Now that the story has been told, retold and discussed ad nauseam on the media, there is a message in it for us. This is a cautionary tale for all Child Lovers who have children in their lives. People will now see the faintest hint of physicality between an adult and a child as possible child abuse and react by telling someone in authority, perhaps going as far as calling the police. The events happening at Penn State will have effects on Child Lovers everywhere

This drama is being played out like a Shakespearean play.
