Somehow the idea of "absolutely implausible yet for some reason believable" needs to be worked in. Think back to the daycare sexual abuse/satanic ritual abuse scandals from a few decades back.

Children testified that knives had been plunged into their rectums, but amazingly the parents never noticed any rectal bleeding... but, the accused were claimed to be "pedophiles", so nothing was beyond belief.
