According to the Youth Media Alliance, there are twice as many male characters than female characters in kids' TV characters and, of that, only 32% of main characters are girls. They made this video to illustrate the results of their findings. (I hope this is in compliance with GC's rules)

It's a rendition of "It's a Hard Knock Life" except the lyrics are about how girls get pegged into stereotypical supporting characters or sidelined to advertising for stereotypical "girly" things, limiting their exposure. It also talks about the lack of diversity as well as how the group couldn't find a SINGLE overweight female main character. It's really clever but also really cute and fun. The middle curly headed one looks just like one of my second cousins. :)

I posted this on an old Facebook account I keep specifically for family members (like I want the grown up ones knowing what I get up to where I live now). It's made me sad I haven't been able to be in the lives of my second cousins. They're all girls and range in age from elementary to early high school. So, in addition to just commenting on their stuff, I compulsively post stuff in my feed or on their walls to help keep my influence in their lives. I also send them books I think they'll like or that have positive messages for girls.

I beat the odds by getting out and succeeding with how narrow and limiting the extremely religious, poverty-burdened, racist, and often irresponsible, violent and ignorant influence of my extended family, so I like to hold myself up as a kind of carrot. It's like, "you want a different life than the people raising you have, like the life I have that I've exposed you to when I take you out to nice things when I visit? Well, read what I post for you to read and you can have it, too!"
