I think Terry is an older man, unaware of the full extent of the hysteria. He serves the fruit as the kids wants it, before the woman corrects him.

The innocent act of eating a banana is interpreted as erotic, because it is a girl. (See Lolita (1997)) Girls, not boys, are too sexy too soon, victims of pedophile men lurking everywhere.

Humor is a good way to highlight questionable behavior, and change minds. Laughter can bring insight, when a more argumentative approach fails.
