For what it's worth, everyone thought this was a Vietnam war protest song. Actually, Steven Stills was writing about curfew riots in Los Angeles County (West Hollywood) that took place on the Sunset Strip, 1966. People sometimes thought it was about the Kent State killings but the "gun" actually belonged to the LA County Sheriff's Department.

I love the song. I used to play it as loud as my car's little radio would go whenever it came on.
