This bothers me too. Strider provided the standard answer(s) you usually get when this question is asked, however, they don't satisfactorily answer the question. One should never enter a long-term relationship under the assumption it will end, especially if the other person doesn't agree with your position or hasn't been consulted. So, entering such a relationship under the assumption the girl will just get over you at the right time is unfair to her, to say the least. If you're not committed to her for the long haul, then you shouldn't be leading her on. It may happen that the relationship ends when it needs to and the girl moves on without a broken heart, but it's delusional (and, I dare say, a little fucked up) to enter such a relationship under the assumption that it will.
