It is clear to me that boys are likely to behave as Markie says and lead to such a heartbreak for the girl; but it's certainly not clear to me that men would behave that way and leave the girl that way.
Ideally, the perfect gentleman, if he wanted to break up, would still convince the girl that it was her idea to break up, so as to avoid her the heartbreak. (Of course, nobody said doing that was easy.)
