Governments have spent most of history, but especially so the recentest centuries, making subjects dependent. A dependent subject, of course, will not rebel, because it would be biting the feeding hand. An independent subject, otoh, will never really be controlled, because they know they can make it alone, without a state to provide. Therefore the state has sought to control all possible areas of life and social activity, so that people are ever more dependent. Today many people cannot even make judgment calls on their own, and need a state to make it for them. This is the direct result of that. People instead of dealing with an issue with common sense, would rather not use their last neuron and instead call the bears.

For those raised in Christianity, this should be outright blasphemous:

Galatians 5:1 (NIV)
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

And also for those raised in Islam:
The greatest Jihad is a word of truth spoken in the face of a tyrant.
