not quite so extreme, please

In reply to Nice post, Baldur. I'm now fully in support of posted by Stahntii on 2011-December-10 16:48:32 EST, Saturday
I have had to use some strong language in order to make my point, but my point was never to suggest that welfare beneficiaries are disgusting parasites. It is true that many take their benefits for granted, but they have been taught to do so. During the Great Depression when the government started handing out charity to make up for the poverty that government policies had caused, many would-be beneficiaries resisted and did not want to take the benefits. Would-be beneficiaries had to be ground down and taught dependency over many years.
"The government does not make it easy for people to be productive; truly productive. There are so many laws, taxes, insurances, special permits and licenses, general restrictions, which keep people from eg. - starting a business and being productive. And so what happens? They are forced to join the welfare parasites. It's almost like society is set up these days to encourage people to become a welfare parasite."
Exactly. Instead of oiling the gears of production, government regulations pour sand and crud on the gears to create friction and cause them to grind to a halt. The politicians wish to restrict competition on behalf of their cronies, and set the productive class against the poor - and the poor against the productive class - to further enrich their cronies. The cronies and the politicians, of course, help each other out, so that both of these groups thrive while they feed off the producers.
I talk about the productive class rather than the working class because it should be noted that some in the productive class are quite rich, and rightly so. These are people who have produced great value, whether by good management of resources or innovation, and are entitled to the value they have produced. Many of the rich, however, derive much of their income directly or indirectly from taxation or from regulations that cripple their competitors. Whether they have cozy deals to provide services to government at inflated rates, get subsidies like many owners of sports teams do, or can charge inflated rates for their services because unnecessary regulations that they helped write prevent new competitors from offering competitive products at lower prices, these are the disgusting parasites in the system, and the truly harmful ones. The parasites receiving government benefits (or being paid to distribute them) are only a symptom of the greater problem - and I believe that most could become productive members of society if the government simply got out of the way.
Take a look at who really benefits the most from the culture of government benefits, however, and you will see that it is the rich and government employees.
