Not for the reasons you say, at least.

I think it was a little easier that they didn't have the language of rights loaded against them. The language of rights was newer, and it hadn't yet completed the Orwellian 180 degrees to mean its opposite as it has now. Sure, both (esp. women) had against them the language of protection, but they still had the language of rights in their favor. We now have all the language of rights against us. They have the discourse in a way women and blacks never had to face from their opposition.
