My kids knew that if I or my wife said something it was to be obeyed. They could disagree, they could get angry about it, they could even ask for reconsideration, sometimes getting it revoked. But they were never yelled at, never physically hit for punishment. The important thing they "knew" was that we would always supervise (follow up on) our decisions. They knew, also, that orders were seldom issued. Mostly it was suggestions: "Perhaps you could do your homework first?" "Could you please pick up your toys and put them away?"
I love your last paragraph!!!
