Some crimes are more reversible, and thus possible to pay back, and some aren't.

If I steal goods from you, I can simply give them back to you (not 100%, you might in the meantime lose other things because of the robbery, eg, if I steal your phone the day you need it for a job interview, but there is a theoretical chance that I can pay you back in full).

If I kill you, it is, at least for now, irreversible. Therefore, NO penalty, whether it's death, life without parole, or ten Hail Mary's, will bring the victim back. So it is not an argument.
