In feigning something other than centrism they have to occasionally quote those outside the center so that they give the appearance of being "Brand X."
They've been quoting Libertarian and Laissez Faire sources since before Ronald Reagan started worshipping Milton Friedman ( while ignoring any policy stances that might have stemmed from the Chicago School. )
Now that everyone is focussed on the economy they're in trouble. They've been selling filler as "Brand X" for so long that they've primed their base to listen to someone who actually stands for what they hide behind.
However, they've thus far done a pretty good job of defending their hypocrisy and not actually giving support for Laissez Faire. Thus the campaign against Paul. While they've traded on the principles, they've made sure that the policies that derive from them are alien to their base.
And yes, some of it rubs up directly against the kowtowing to the Xtian Right that they've also branded themselves as. They can't simultaneously "avoid foreign entanglements," and ensure endtime prophesies requiring a Jewish State.
