The bus stopped for a few minutes at a town on the way to my final destination (somewhere in Southeast Asia). The usual old women scrabbled aboard to try to sell peanuts, sweet rolls, candy, and fried bananas. In my usual way, I just try to ignore their selling bantering as they shuffle by trying to push their wares in your face. But then there was one woman that sounded different. I looked over and saw a young girl of maybe 6 or 7 years of age selling the same goods. Our eyes met and locked. Her youthful beauty was captivating and convincing. She convinced me to buy some of her candy breath mints. Our transaction continued with an exchange of smiles between us while she tried to sell peanuts. I declined. She kept trying and I gave in and bought another small bag of candy from her. She leaned over and still tried to sell her peanuts with the price getting less and less. I almost thought she was going to give me a bag of peanuts free. She finally gave up as the bus driver was sounding horn for the women to depart the bus. She quickly stood and looked towards the front of the bus. But before she started to leave, she looked back and gave me a smile of thanks as she knew I gave her more money that she needed. She needed it as her t-shirt was sleeveless and probably from an older brother, stained and discoloured. Her hair needed a good search for lice. And her chin and neck needed a washing. But to me, she was a beauty.
