Regarding AhNasty

Hey guys & gals,

I have been away for a while dealing with some upheavals in the lives of others. This means that I have most likely missed out on things, but now I’m back I’ve noticed some arguments occurring, most recently involving AhNasty.

I realize that some folks have felt offended by AhNasty, but I’m sure that he meant no offense toward any of you. I am sorry for hurt caused, to anyone.

I’ve spent some time reading through quite a few threads, and whilst he may have done some inadvisable things, such as ask for email addies, I can’t see that he has done anything obviously wrong – ok, perhaps the googling bit was a little foolish, but I don’t think anything sinister was going on there. AhNasty was not on the board when I last left a few months ago, so he seems a comparative newbie. I myself made a lot of mistakes when I was a newbie.

Whilst GC is a place of community, and a place where we can meet and discuss anything from political happenings in the world, to the day-to-day problems that we as individuals face, I feel that it’s also important to honor the notion that by and large, we are also to some extent here to make a stand against the prejudice against us that exists in this world. Prejudices take many forms, and they are often subtle and insidious in the ways they creep into any community or system – I think we should be vigilant against all of them.

Just as no-one gets anything they want by falling to their knees and begging, we do not achieve our own principles by working against them ourselves.

Whether AhNasty is a troll or not, I have no idea. But, I haven’t seen anything to strongly indicate that he is yet, so I personally will proceed as if he is not. He seems to be in a bad space right now, where he needs a friendly hand. I just feel that guidance might be better than harshness, is all.

We would like society to accept us for who and what we are, and for the nons out there to show us some understanding and compassion. Perhaps a good way to help that to happen would be for us to show that same understanding and compassion to others, both on GC and in the wider world. No-one has to get their fingers burnt – there should never any danger in compassion, and it costs you absolutely nothing.

So please, can we stop beating up on AhNasty, or anyone else who has shown no reason to deserve it; please? Hypersonic is another of our number who springs to mind here, as well.

Time will tell who our friends and enemies are. In the meantime, let’s stop doing the job of our real enemies for them, which is to defeat us by creating division and discord within our community.

I am aware this message might not be popular. It’s not meant to be popular or unpopular – it’s only an observation, I guess. I might accused of being naive, and I might be proved wrong in what I’ve said, but perhaps it’s better to be wrong in kindness than wrong in hatred.
