A Thousand Leaves ⚠️ ↗

by Stereophonics

This song is about how one alleged sexual encounter between a well-respected coach in a small community and a young girl completely alters that community forever more. What I like about the song is that it ultimately leaves it up to the listener whether it actually happened, kind of like the movie Doubt. But it very accurately describes how at least the gossip of this event can ruin or shake up lives, including those outside of the event itself. I'll explain in a minute, but here's a sample of the lyrics:

It started with a school girl
Who was running, running home to her Mam
And Dad told them she was playing in the
Change room of her local football side they
Said tell us again, she told them again
Tell us the truth, they found it hard
To believe 'cause he taught our I was Steve, he
Even trained me, taught Uncle John who's
Father of three

But it only takes one tree to make
A thousand matches
Only takes one match to burn
A thousand trees
A thousand trees

The last part is the chorus, and note that it's a very apt metaphor. "It only takes one tree to make a thousand matches" refers to the fact that one teacher or coach can touch a thousand lives, but also the flip side is true in cases like these. One "match" (one child) can also burn down a thousand trees--that is, his or accusations can change the way all coaches and teachers (especially male ones) are viewed and treated thereafter. It shakes everything up. A very powerful song with a good point: whether the event in question happened or not, when something like this occurs it changes everything.
