I believe that (and this is at least true in my personal experience), self-expression fulfills an important mental health need. While it's nice to have people agreeing with you (and even people disagreeing, as debate can be very stimulating, if not also educational), there is something very painful about feeling as if your voice is being stifled, that people won't even go so far as to let you speak. Freedom of speech does not guarantee that anyone's opinion must be listened to, just that that person has the right to speak it. Yet we are frequently denied that right.
