Better then to find a few simple rules (no initiation of force, threat of force, or fraud) and trust that the majority will work together for their benefit and for ours.
Ya know what, this is what I stand behind in a very basic nutshell, Baldur. Though Markie claims I am "far left," that is not really accurate, because I basically stand behind a system of governance where the power is evenly disbursed through everyone (so that the majority alone is not supreme), where prohibitions of behavior are limited to that which are proven to cause demonstrable harm to others, and tenets based on trust, not rampant mistrust, of our fellow human being. I know that some people in our community have ill intentions, but to say or imply that huge numbers of us do, or that huge numbers of emancipated kids would be "easy victims" for those who are truly bad, is projecting one's own personal distaste for humanity upon our entire community. Arguing that the majority of us are not scum is not tantamount to arguing that every single one of us is above reproach. Yes, people like Markie project their own fears and insecurities about themselves due to all the societal indoctrination on their own community, and when others critique this, they claim we are in denial of any negative aspect of our community whatsoever. Well, we're human, so of course we all have foibles, and our community has its share of bad eggs. It's just not filled to the brim with such bad eggs, or our personal foibles, any worse than any other community of people. There is nothing inherently bad about having our attraction base that justifies society having an adversarial stance with us, or we having an adversarial stance with ourselves.
As for the variation on a theme issue, with the theme we have now being the "only" theme...that explains, in another nutshell, why Markie and others like him are so loyal to the status quo as it now exists, while ignoring that the theme has changed numerous times throughout history. The component of the theme that forms the modern paradigm of the child is a very recent one in world history, so it doesn't stand to reason that this is an aspect of the "main theme" that will exist forever. People who act otherwise are simply married to this component of the modern theme because they were indoctrinated with it. What is the "main theme" that every change can only hope to produce but a variation of? This is simply used as an excuse to teach people they are impotent to make any type of fundamental change, which is precisely the reason why majorly needed change is so slow to happen. People like Markie buy into the jingoism of the current status quo being somehow fixed in nature, and as a result, they use this as an excuse to oppose change, and to bastardize all suggested change with loaded terms like "utopianism" or promising some type of "perfection" when the true adherents of such change have never promised any such thing, but simply a better world. We don't have to achieve something akin to perfection in order to achieve true improvement and growth.
