I can understand refraining yourself from cursing in some contexts - it's something that indicates a degree of familiarity that is many times not there in the people who are doing it. Keeping it that way has a valid social role. I would argue especially so in English, which has maaaaany regional variants, and which doesn't have a grammatical "T/V" distinction as German and Romance do.

But I cannot understand active censorship of any word by its own sake. Forbidden books, whether "Mein Kampf", "The Satanic Verses" or "A Pedophile's Guide to Pleasure" can at least be argued to contain dangerous, harmful ideas that could inspire or exacerbate anti-social activity (not that I would concede the point, but I don't deny its attractiveness and that it has a non-zero merit). But words alone? Really?

Of course it also makes it hotter when little girls have a potty mouth... but that's a subject for another post...
