I have noticed the same thing: musicians concentrate on the music, poets concentrate on the words - and though the two fields are related, in practice one half tends to succeed at the expense of the other. For instance, a good poet can insert many layers of meaning into a poem, but lyrics to music seldom attempt this - and some lyrics are so bad that I shudder every time I hear them, even though I like the music they go with.

However, I would not go so far as to say that it never happens.

What do you think of Schiller's "An die Freude" set to music by Beethoven in his 9th Symphony? I admit I don't understand German too well, so perhaps I miss subtle flaws, but Schiller is widely regarded as one of the greatest poets in the German language so I'm guessing it's not too shabby - and I know that Beethoven did a good job on the music in this case. But perhaps the lyrics are a little too simplistic for your taste, even though they are good?
