"Who are the Lord Byrons and John Donnes of the modern age? I say they are folk, pop and rock musicians like Josh Ritter, Maynard Keenan, Tori Amos, Roger Waters, Nick Cave, Poe, Billy Corgan"

Please note I never said that there are no good lyricists today. I was specifically addressing the example you gave, which IMNSHO was substandard.

I agree that Tori Amos has some good lyrics, and whoever writes the lyrics for Devotchka - which reminds me of another example for Griffith: Devotchka - "The End". I am sure there are others. All the same, the modern 3 minute song has its limits, and the demands of the music often shortchange the quality of the lyrics. There are many more bad examples than good ones, in accordance with Sturgeon's Law.
