I have never read horror, nor do I consider The Exorcist to be such, but rather as a suspenseful supernatural detective story, or paranormal police procedural. -- Blatty.

He's always resisted the horror classification; I really wish he wouldn't. The Exorcist is on one level a detective story, but it's a lot more than a detective story... Keep the horror classification, and by virtue of its breadth, it can include everything it actually is.
