In our society kids feel trapped.

Our society gives off the vibe that kids have to stay with their current caretaker. The idea that they can pick their own is.... just no where in their thoughts.

I think two things would happen if society allowed this. One is that parents and caretakers would take more care to make sure the kids wanted to live with them. Another thing is that kids would realize they have more freedom than they do now. They know they could go to a better caretaker if the one they live with treats them like shit.

That being said even those changes won't always work. Abuse can be very damaging and defeating.
