As horrific as the crime is I don't think it's fair that in one instance she's deemed as a child of sixteen, but once she does a horrific crime suddenly she's able to be charged as an adult.

Yeah, I made pretty much the same point in my Facebook post about this article. Funny how that works, huh? I basically had a mini-rant about how we seem to treat kids like adults when they do super-bad stuff, but when they do super-good stuff we still treat them like kids. Then I went on to say how our whole society is like a huge dysfunctional family: when you do the right thing it ignores you st best, but as soon as you screw up in any way it is down on you like a wolf on the fold (to paraphrase Lord Byron.) Even though positive reinforcement is proven to work better, we are a culture obsessed with the negative consequences--vengeance and penalties after the fact.
