They chose or at least acquiesced at first, but had regrets when the abuse began.

What we mean by choice of caretakers is that it should be completely reversible, like adults choose a marriage or a job but can quit it too at any time; not that you have one shot forever and you cannot ever change your mind.

And your own phrasing hints at some form of possibility of cancelling the previous choice too, so you clearly see the benefits in this.
