You know, I agree with everything you just said. I simply think that wanting a younger child is still a natural instinct, even if misguided or dismissive of the needs of the children-to-adopt population.
Besides, we can end up with a lot more issues too if we wanted. Race, for instance. White and Asian kids have it comparatively easy, Black and Hispanic kids just don't. Of course it's wrong (and of course it is a surviving pocket of racism), but otoh I understand that for many parents it is somewhat important that their child resembles them so as not to have to explain adoption stories every time parent and child are in the same social occasion.
Then gender. If I ever get to adopt (while I want to, not likely, because single males are treated like lepers) I openly admit I would have a strong preference for girls. And many other adopters have a gender preference too of varying intensity. I might not have a race preference, and only a weak age preference, but I would not adopt a boy - certainly not as first, before any girls.
