1850 was in the 1700s?

Read what I wrote again: we have plenty of diversity in our population even though kids have been subject to mandatory schooling in parts of the US since at least the 1700s.

A) I never said this was the rule or law everywhere in the US, and B) "mandatory schooling" does not have to mean state-enforced. Parent-enforced is quite sufficient to the definition, since parents were basically the law with regard to kids for the longest time. By the 1700s some public schools were in operation and many private preparatory-style schools were in operation. Are you under the illusion that all those kids went to school of their own free will? Puh-lease.
