I guess it comes to the difference (in definitions) between empathy and sympathy. (I'm sure I'm going to get this backwards...) I am sympathetic with boy lovers. I understand them, but I do not feel what they feel for who they feel for. I am empathetic with little girl lovers. I understand them and I do feel what they feel for who they feel for. (Or, I could have the two words reversed in meaning. I'm too lazy to get Google to define: it for me. :-/ )
Then, on the other side of the coin, I understand murderers. I am sympathetic with someone who had killed illegally. I understand them, and it is possible that I could, in some circumstances feel what they felt for who they felt for. I do not condone what they have done, either. I do not understand child murderers or child rapists. ...it is possible that I could, in some circumstances feel what [normal murderers] felt for who they felt for. This is possible because of the feelings I have for anyone who hurts a child.
I hope you understand. Geez, things got complicated to write! :)
