There were some very stressful, though luckily short periods in my past when I experienced it -- even though I had been sober. However, I'm not on medication, I don't need it.

I am familiar with the extreme anxiety those phenomena can cause -- or maybe the anxiety is not caused by the voices: it is better say that both the voices and the anxiety come from the same source.

Once, in the 80s, I experienced it after an amphetamine period, but it is quite natural if you take that stuff too much or too long. However, as I said, I experienced the same maybe twice without any drugs or alcohol. Luckily those were short episodes, short and nasty. You know how satanic and malicious those voices can be.
