In the New Testament there is a verse saying that once a person has accepted God into their heart, the body is a temple. Presumably, then, one should take care of God's temple, and not harm it by bad habits. There is not an outright prohibition of alcohol, but there is an expectation of moderate use at most. Many desire to avoid alcohol entirely as a means of avoiding unnecessary temptation.

There are considerable differences among sects.

As for whether you are destroying yourself by (ab)using alcohol and other drugs, that is not something I can say.
