But at the same time I wonder, since marriage is so stupid, religious, restrictive, regulated, etc, why do gays actually want it?

Cause in order to get accepted they decided they better conform to societies restrictive and regulated notions of relationships and sexuality. If you can’t beat em, join em! :)

Mind you, most young gays of this most recent generation have no idea this is what happened. They grew up on the idea that being allowed to get married was the ultimate form of acceptance.
