I had a French exchange student friend (female) of mine tell me once that it was customary for French teachers to stand at the door a kiss each student on the lips hello and good bye each day. I don't know how widespread that was. That would be scandolous in the U.S.

I find it kind of amusing how so many people take strict positions on this when as many of the comments relate it is often just a cultural issue. Kids will mostly do what is expected of them but like the toddler (Nora) some can be insistent if they really prefer to do it one way.
