If the men had of accepted the girls it wouldn't have changed a thing. The city would still have been destroyed as originally intended. If the kids (they had to be young indeed) had been raped it would have changed nothing. Lot was trying to save the angels from harm. Since he had accepted them under his roof he was expected to do anything possible to keep them from harm.

Whether it is acceptable to god or not isn't the question. God didn't offer the two girls in return for the angels safety. Lot did.

The fact that they refused the offer of the two girls shows just how bad that "city" was. Remember cities back then in that area consisted of thousands at the most.
