The "minority" status of women is given by social status, not by numbers. Of course, you're right: women are most often a majority and even when they aren't (they weren't dying in war and homicides, but they were in childbirth) they're the largest of minorities.

And yes, they have never been as expendable as racial and ethnic minorities. Their subordinate status was never as subordinate as leaving them in mortal dangers. Indeed, their subordinacy was often justified from protection, rather than the opposite. (in which they do resemble children/minors)
