I completely agree with you. You just need to look towards Mexico as another example. You have the corruption of the PRI who dominates the elections in Mexico and has known ties with the cartels.

A significant gap between the rich and the poor. Just go to any border city, you see kids as young as 4 years old selling chicklets at the border. It is depressing because you don't have enough quarters to give each kid one. Mexico has the richest person in the world due to a monopoly, and then you find kids with no shoes doing acts for the tourist.
