I'm beginning to understand this more clearly.

I'd offer anyone desirous of fundamental changes in society's mores, and the anticipated freedom from persecution under that strict community, that standing at the front of a battle has its undesired side-effects. A vanguard can't expect to survive unscathed and without potential injury if they wish to rush headlong into the fray unprotected.

The reason young men are more apt to be casualties in war might have to do with old men's experience and reluctance to charge into the thick of battle armed only with pride and courage. It takes years to forge a suit of armor, and the time spent at the anvil can do more for the blacksmith than developing an impressive level of protection.
