I like the approach one of my friends gave their daughter. I would rather it just be allowed, but that's not going to happen and doing that kind of behavior in front of others will get her into trouble eventually.

When the girl started doing it in the room the parents didn't freak out or anything, but calmly told her to stop. The mother took her around the corner presumably to be out of earshot, but I was curious and strained and I could hear. She told her daughter that what she was doing was perfectly normal. But that she should do that in her room only when she is alone. She immediately asked if she could go to her room and the mother said OK and came back to talk to us.

It was hard to think about the conversation after that.
