As the story notes, the practice of child marriage is common in the area - yet resulting death is not common, and happened in part because proper medical care was not available.

It is of course a tragedy, but we should not presume such injuries to be common, much less the norm. Everything has risks, including riding the bus to school or enjoying a day at the beach. We do not make decisions based on freak occurrences, and people generally cite such occurrences only if they already have a belief that they wish to find support for.

All that said, of course no one should pursue physical acts that are likely to cause injury, and in an ideal world where adults and children could enjoy sexual relations with each other, adults should always take care to be gentle - at least until they have a good understanding of what the child is capable of.
