"Even with the earth Curvature, I don't see a straight path from Amsterdam, to Ukraine, to Malaysia."

Just because you don't comprehend how it became the standard route doesn't mean that it wasn't.

Malaysia didn't INVENT a new route to place people in harm's way.

I suspect your evaluation of 9/11 is also fueled by similar failure to comprehend. After 9/11 every ignorant schmoe became an engineering "expert" and spouted all sorts of stuff over the internet.

I am not adverse to recognizing conspiracies where they do exist. But I don't fabulate them in everything.

And why should most of these ornate conspiracies which require the precise control of everything everywhere exist outside of spy fiction? Simple opportunism will serve the same purpose.

The invasion of Iraq was planned by The Vulcan's as part of the New American Century long before its excuse came along. But had Bin Laden been unsuccessful, it would have been some other pretext. Heck, the first Gulf War was very simple in structure. Send the message that an invasion of Kuwait didn't concern us. And then act the opposite way when they took the bait. No need for the globe to be in on it; or to pretend that the Kuwaitis were all CIA agents who "let this happen."

In RL, conspiracies tend to be small and awkward things.

But I can see why the fiction of secret masters pulling the strings is a comforting fiction. It elevates the importance of the person claiming to be able to see what nobody else can. But more importantly it comforts us with the notion that mastery is possible and that strings exist.

Further, there's something deeply unsatisfactory with RL's constant refrain that random sh*t happens. We WANT meaning and sense. We impose them where they don't exist or where the meanings aren't satisfying.

The JFK nuts impulse stems from something understandable; the refusal to believe that an important powerful beloved figure was assassinated by a nobody for unimportant reasons. We need to magnify Oswald or his "cause" in order to balance the scales.

But RL just doesn't make good fiction. Real conspiracies like Iran-Contra are not carried out by supermen or puppet-masters who can erase all traces of their deeds ( except to the true believer. )

But back to the point. No new flight plan needed. And given enough time and enough violence from the pro-Russian separatists; something would have been seized on if not this.

Opportunism explains more.
