They're a hodgepodge of varying groups with different beliefs.

Unfortunately the folks at the Southern Poverty Law Center aren't interested in distinguishing between any of them.

For the most part I disagree with just about every organized group I've discovered. Many of them are prone to racism, "love it or leave it" xenophobia, the worship of machismo, and often a very selective reading of the founding fathers.

Me. I'd side with the anti-Federalists among the founders. And I agree with the notion that "a standing army is ever the enemy of liberty," but I also believe that it applies to local militias who never disband. I'm not asking them to disarm, mind you. But the never disbanding thing is what the founders objected to.

Many of them seem to be the deeply misanthropic survivalist types who assume that everyone will turn feral at a moment's notice. And yet they fail to see that this is the VERY argument that majoritarian Statists ( like GC's Markaba ) use to justify the need for a strong central State. Me, I don't suspect that the neighbor's eye me with cannibalistic designs which only armed cops/posses can keep at bay.

I'm Anti-government because I believe that people are capable of self-government; and therefore don't need to give others power over them. Most folks seem to believe this about themself, but deny it among their neighbors.

There's an old Libertarian maxim to the effect that; "If people are good, you don't need a government. If people are evil, you don't dare have one." Corruption in government isn't a flaw, it is a design feature. Positions which confer power over others will attract those who desire power.

But I don't think that the solution to an ever encroaching State lies in permanently armed Christian-Identity types cooking up conspiracy theories about CIA mind-control rays or Illuminati masters.
