I know perfectly that mind reading is not yet so advanced. I even included it as a conditional: "assuming it's accurate enough." However the progress is fast and is accelerating as we study brain structures to copy them into our own computers. 20 years seem to me to be close to the threshold where I expect to see enough accuracy to read things like this. We are already creating movable aids for paralyzed or limbless people controlled by thinking about it.

I am even more sure about governments, though, than about technology. There is no government on earth, and there will not appear any anytime soon, which does not follow the UN consensus on three subjects, namely: "drugs," "terrorism," and "pedophiles." Some are trying to remove pot from "drugs" and some use more lenient penalties than others, but none questions the category itself of drugs or the war itself with all its consequences. Some call "freedom fighter" what the other calls "terrorist" and even aid them on this basis, but none questions the category of terrorism or the war on it with its consequences. Equally, some countries set the AOC at 18, and some at 16, and some at 15. Some have different AOCs for same-sex acts. Most have different AOCs for pronz or prostitution. Sure, some have more lenient laws too. But none questions the category and none questions the war and its consequences.

This is just as true for Amerika and Best Korea, for Israel and Iran, Russia and the Ukraine, or Luxembourg and Haiti.

The differences conceal underlying similarities which are greater.

Furthermore, I gravely doubt that normal folk would just sit back and let the government rummage through their brains unopposed just to hunt some half imagined boogieman. For that to happen the entire world would have to turn into 1984 overnight and the very concept of human rights would have to be erased from existence.

People in Nazi occupied Europe were freer than in any developed country today.

In 1940, no country had national medical records divulging your medical vulnerabilities. You could pay anything in metal bars if you didn't have cash, (plastic was not even a dream) rendering you untraceable, and rendering many economic transactions untaxable. Sure the Nazis asked "papers please" on every corner, but you could make a false identity document in your garage, seen how they didn't have holograms, invisible inks, micro-impressions, not to even mention magnetic bands or microchips. You could deny belonging to the scapegoat group by memorizing the Lord's Prayer and a handful of Christian hymns. Because, by 1920-1930, European countries didn't have universal birth certificate coverage, and much less registered ethnicity on them. The Nazis were the first in both fronts; and now every developed country has virtually universal birth certificate coverage, and you bet they register ethnicity! Oh yes, the Nazis also centralized education more than anyone else ever had, but nobody reverted back in 1945. And they also confiscated all of Europe's guns, and unless you live in Texas, they remain confiscated. They certainly didn't place so many barriers to travel as exist now, when the checkpoints may be less in number, but much more insane in invasiveness. And they certainly never achieved a level of complete interception of all communications - and not for lack of trying. Overall, government today is a greater share of the world GDP than ever in history, taxes a greater share of it than ever in history, and employs a larger share of people than ever in history. And the trend is much more advanced in developed countries.

People speak of totalitarianism as if it may or may not happen in the future.

But the frog is boiled already. It just didn't realize when the heat was turned up.

We do not live in a potential 1984. We live in a kinetic 1984.

And this is not a conspiracy theory. This isn't the work of the Jews, Illuminati, Freemasons, Reptilians or Muslim Brotherhood. In a way that is scarier, actually. This is the work of millions of individuals, all over the world, where each individual is only advancing their own rational interests, for one person only, and only in a scope limited in time, place and power; and certainly not doing so with a vision of changing the world radically. But all of those individuals working together in the same direction are a formidable force. A colony, if you pardon the analogy.
