The effects are weaker than I thought. Point conceded.
The effectiveness for extremely serious depression seems not to be in doubt, and that is surely important. The study was limited to SSRIs and not the other antidepressants. It is certainly interesting in our real world to harness the placebo effect based on a statistically significant but clinically not significant effect. A cheap generic at a low dose, minimizing side effects, seems a reasonable compromise. If you say to a patient, "On average these drugs don't make a noticeable difference, but do you want to see how they work for you?" that seems honest and also potentially quite helpful. |
