When I was a late teen I was holding on tight for dear life.

I thought that if I gave up any of my beliefs I would cease being me.

I eventually looked into the chaos and had a vision ( more of a visualization ) that whoever would emerge at the other end would still be me. So I started letting go of some of my neuroses.

The thing that always reassures me when facing the challenge to give up and adapt to uncomfortable facts is that I've done it so many times and still have the same dumb sense of humor. I doubt my old friends would realize just how much I've allowed the world to reshape itself around me.

There's a single underlying reality that I can't know directly. And then there's the worldview, which is just a model. I've got to be willing to give up any particular model for a better one.

So I guess I'm saying that the Beatle's mantra sounds great if you're tapped mystically into the source. But it sounds like pigheaded stubbornness if you're describing your views.
