""as a horse trader in 16th century France who is cheated by a Baron."
Kohlhaas is not a French name. He was a citizen of Cölln." I was describing the character seen in the film Age of Uprising. This French character is neither a citizen of Colln as the historical Hans Kohlhase was, or more to a relevant point, a citizen of Brandenberg where the source novel's fictional Michael Kohlhaas lived. From Wikipedia; "Age of Uprising: The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas (French: Michael Kohlhaas) is a 2013 French-German drama film directed by Arnaud des Pallières based on Heinrich von Kleist's novella Michael Kohlhaas, which again is based on the story of Hans Kohlhase. " The film is entirely relocated to France, the dialogue is French and magically vanished is the Elector of Saxony, replaced by a Governor answerable to the Princess of Angoulême. ( Which is why she is mentioned in my film review. ) I've never read the German novel but I can find no description of either the novel or the German film adaptation by Volker Schlondorff which refers to a cute daughter who accompanies him. If for that alone the relocation to France is worth it. :) Dante |
