Hi Ethan,

> Discretion is the better part of valor

Sometimes. More often it indicates a character flaw - a manipulative personality, a lack of courage, uncertainty about how you really feel on a subject.

You are completely wrong about Finkelhor. He is like many (maybe most) of the people who deal with us professionally. Go back and read his early writings, and you will see the invidious animus he carries against us clearly. He would murder you in cold blood if he had the means to get away with it. A scorpion is still a scorpion, no matter how self-empowered he makes you feel about being a frog.

I stand by my original statement: Dr. Cantor should embrace the notion that pedophilia is an orientation, no different than teliophilia, and become an outspoken advocate of that position. Without doing so, he will never bridge the gap between the distrust pedophiles and hebephiles generally feel towards some of his positions and work, and the innate certainty most of us feel that we didn't choose to be this way and that it wasn't due to some event in our childhoods.

My pedophilia is just as immutable as the homosexuality Dr. Cantor experiences. Why does he denigrate my experience in life by asking his audience to forgive him even suggesting that my reality is somehow less than what his audience experiences in their teliophilia? I understand political reality. I also understand when something alienates the very people you are working with in a professional capacity, and this will always have that effect.

He's already made the claim. He would be well served to back it up strongly instead of hedging.
