Suetonius, the only witness for this anecdote, puts a Greek quote into Caesar's mouth: ita tribus et uiginti plagis confossus est uno modo ad primum ictum gemitu sine uoce edito, etsi tradiderunt quidam Marco Bruto irruenti dixisse: καὶ σὺ τέκνον; (Div. Iul., 82) So according to Suetonius, the usual version of Caesar's death was that he died without uttering a single word, and only some claimed that he adressed Brutus with a Greek phrase. Even Suetonius recognizes that there is probably no truth to this version. Surf safe;) NFiH |
