But this still assumes that a person who loves another is incapable of deliberately hurting them, and that is clearly wrong. People can still feel they are treating their beloved well whilst serving their own self-interests. Human beings are fallible in so many ways. There's a reason why cognitive biases are so well defined and that so many of them have been identified: the human mind is capable of twisting itself into some pretty complex knots in order to quell cognitive dissonance. In fact, I'm sure we've all done it, and probably continue to do it--you can never mitigate for cognitive biases entirely.
