We Are The Best came out on DVD recently in Northam.
This Swedish film is a period piece set in '82 about a couple of 13 year olds who decide to form a punk band. Even though it has a "battle of the bands" set piece in it, the film is less about music and more about attitude. ( In fact, the girls are never THAT good musically. ) The 13 year olds lure a 14 year old who actually CAN play into their practically nonexistent band mostly on the basis of her outsider status and not giving a f*ck what others think. The dynamic is fascinating. While Bobo is the thoughtful ( and I think cutest ) one, its Klara who is the instigator and dynamo. And yet, as is typical, Klara may be the energetic one who goads others into acting, but she can also be something of an egomaniac and bully. The film has won praise for its quirky but accurate portrayal of girls at this age. And has also been singled out in the music press for being the best film about punk. As with many European films, it isn't about a contrived plot driven by extraordinary events. It just unfolds more like life does. Director Lukas Moodysson has always been interesting. But as he goes on, he seems less interested in clever plot, and more on being a better observer. Irritable, goofy, independent, jealous, boy-crazy and ready to flip off the 7th grade; these girls rock. Dante |
