I suspect a lot of the hate comes from a couple of places -- one: a couple generations back, makeup would be something that "adult" women wore in order to make themselves look "pretty" in order to attract a husband. So, a lot of the squick there is from Antis who are uncomfortable with what they parse as a child being sexual (which, obviously isn't possible, right? Cue the standard Anti talking points, etc.)
The second is that just a generation or so ago, you had Second-Wave feminists; burning bras, refusing makeup and shaving, and doing a lot to emulate a particular kind of masculinity (because male == power/female == weakness.) I still see plenty of that influence around in hateful comments toward anyone who wants to wear lipstick and heels -- that whole "false consciousness" thing, how you can't really choose to do that because it's just "capitulating to the patriarchy" and all that cr*p. So when you have that whole line of thinking joining the previous group, you basically get a mindset that says a girl doing a makeup tutorial on YouTube has been "brainwashed" into doing something "unnatural" (wearing makeup) and she's started "too early" (being sexual.) Of course, it's all BS, as we know full well, because LGs can absolutely be sexual creatures, and makeup on any woman can be for her own desire, as much as many men may look at her (and Dante's brilliant post hit that spot-on, re: Male Gaze and lack of harm and everybody looks and whatnot.) tl;dr -- People freak out about women wearing makeup, people freak out about kids being sexual and/or sexually attractive. Hateful comments come out of that. |
