Of course I know the bolas. Although it is unnatural to me to refer to it as such even though it is the accepted English name. Bolas, literally, only refers to the spheres, or balls ("bola" in Spanish.) The weapon has a South American Native origin and was quickly adopted by the White colonists in the Southern Cone. Modern gauchos are expected to be experts in their use. But the proper Latin American Spanish name is "boleadora" which, although etymologically related to the ball itself, makes understood that the balls are only a part of the weapon, even if it is the most important, but not THE weapon whole. If you said you hunt with "bolas" it would sound like you hunt by throwing the spheres alone, not that you hunt with the spheres AND rope. |
